The Legal Response to Hate Speech: Should the U.S. be more like Europe?

Democracies differ significantly when addressing the constitutionality of laws regulating hate speech. This event brings together Jeremy Waldron University Professor, NYU School of Law, and Chichele Professor of Social and Political Theory All Souls College, Oxford University and James Weinstein, Amelia Lewis Professor of Constitutional Law, Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law, ASU; two internationally recognized experts on the law and philosophy of free speech to ask the question, “Should the U.S. be more like Europe in its legal response to hate speech?” This issue is of special relevance at ASU because, as with other American universities, campus free speech areas are frequently the site for the expression of disturbing viewpoints, including opinions that many feel constitute hate speech.
